In a landmark initiative blending heritage with contemporary design, the Government of India unveiled “Vishwa Sutra – Weaves of India for the World” at the 61st edition of Femina Miss India in Bhubaneswar. The collection marks a fresh approach to presenting Indian handlooms on a global stage.

Developed collaboratively by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles and the National Institute of Fashion Technology, the showcase reimagines traditional Indian weaves through international design perspectives.
Vishwa Sutra: A Fusion of 30 Weaves and 30 Global Inspirations
At the heart of “Vishwa Sutra” lies an ambitious concept—bringing together 30 distinct Indian handloom traditions, each representing a different state, and pairing them with inspirations drawn from 30 countries across the world.
Rather than presenting handlooms in their conventional form, the collection interprets them through global aesthetics. This includes:
Odisha Ikat styled with Greek-inspired silhouettes
Kanchipuram weaves aligned with Scandinavian minimalism
Muga silk infused with Egyptian design elements
Patola textiles reimagined with Spanish influences
Banarasi fabrics adapted into UAE-inspired ensembles
This cross-cultural approach offers a renewed design vocabulary, positioning Indian textiles within a modern, international fashion narrative.
Preserving Heritage While Driving Innovation
“Vishwa Sutra” is more than a fashion showcase—it represents a strategic shift in how Indian handlooms are perceived globally. By integrating traditional craftsmanship with contemporary styling, the initiative aims to:
Reinforce the relevance of handlooms in modern fashion
Highlight the craftsmanship passed down through generations
Expand global appreciation for India’s textile diversity
The collection underscores the idea that innovation and tradition can coexist, allowing heritage crafts to evolve without losing authenticity.
Strengthening Livelihoods and Cultural Identity
Speaking at the event, Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), emphasized the sector’s broader impact. Beyond aesthetics, the handloom industry plays a vital role in:
Sustaining rural livelihoods
Supporting women-led enterprises
Preserving India’s cultural identity
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of “Gaon to Global”, which seeks to connect grassroots artisans with international markets through design innovation and branding.
From ‘Vocal for Local’ to Global Markets
“Vishwa Sutra” also reflects the larger policy direction of transforming traditional industries into globally competitive sectors. It supports the “Vocal for Local to Global” movement and aligns with the Prime Minister’s 5F framework:

By positioning handlooms within global fashion ecosystems, the initiative aims to strengthen India’s presence in international textile markets while ensuring sustainable economic opportunities for artisans.
