Tamil Nadu Textile Industry at a Crossroads as Elections Drive Policy Discussions

Tamil Nadu textile industry gains attention ahead of elections, with Tiruppur exporters pushing for policy support, a knitwear board, and infrastructure development.

As the Tamil Nadu elections gather momentum, the state’s garment and textile sector has emerged as a key area of political attention. Representing a substantial voter base, Tamil Nadu textile industry has been receiving assurances from major political parties regarding support for its growth and the welfare of its workforce.

Recently, leaders from various political parties engaged with representatives of the Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA), seeking their backing. However, these interactions have largely centered on broad commitments, with no concrete policy measures announced so far.

In an exclusive interaction with Apparel Resources, KM Subramanian, President of TEA and Founder-Chairman of Tiruppur-based K M Knitwear Pvt Ltd, highlighted key demands from regional textile and apparel bodies. One of the primary proposals is the creation of a dedicated Knitwear Board under the Government. This board would include representatives from major industry associations, enabling more coordinated discussions and decision-making.

He also emphasized the need for a world-class convention centre in Tiruppur. Such a facility, built to international standards, would enhance engagement between local manufacturers and global buyers, improving business opportunities and overall industry visibility.

Tamil Nadu is home to several major textile hubs, including Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Salem, Dindigul, Karur, and Erode. The state’s textile exports reached approximately US $8 billion in FY 2024–25. The sector currently employs around one million people, with Tiruppur alone accounting for garment exports worth about ₹15,000 crore (US $1.62 billion).
